Vientiane reviews wild animal trafficking prevention

(KPL) The Agriculture and Forestry Service in Vientiane Capital held a meeting on inspection of wild animal trafficking prevention in the Capital.

Wild animals such as flying squirrel, bears, deer, snakes, spines, monkeys and rats are commonly traded by local traffickers. Meanwhile officials warn that consuming wild animals can lead to infection of various deadly diseases.

Mr. Khamphet Mounthady, Director of the Agriculture and Forestry Service of Vientiane Capital, who is also President of the Committee on Inspection of the Wild Animal Trafficking Prevention in Vientiane Capital, presided over the meeting.

The Wild Animal Trafficking Prevention in Vientiane Capital has been implemented since 2002 with the assistance from the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS) in Laos, the United States Fish and Wildlife Service and University of Minnesota, USA.

Activities of the project include advertising and raising public awareness on wild animal trafficking for markets, restaurants, bus stations and airports and the promotion of public participation in wild animal protection, which are vital for ecosystem.

The project is implemented in the districts of Chanthaboury, Sikhottabong, Sisattanark, Saysettha and Saythany.
